sulfa drugs

sulfa drugs
sulfa drugs,
a family of drugs containing sulfur dioxide (SO2), especially those derived from sulfanilamide, that are generally powerful in checking the growth of certain bacteria. Members of the group are used (sometimes with antibiotics) chiefly to combat streptococcic, pneumococcic, meningococcic, and staphylococcic infections, but all are more or less toxic and are restricted in use. »

Sulfa drugs became available just before World War II and played an important role in preventing deaths from wound infection on the battlefield (Sidonie M. Gruenberg).
